The Early Childhood Development Mapping Project (ECMap) is an Alberta Education initiative, aimed at strengthening Alberta's ability to make positive early childhood development a reality for every child in the province. The ECMap project has gathered information on early childhood development for communities, regions and the province of Alberta as a whole. The research has used the following information to create community profiles:
Early Development Instrument (EDI) assessments of kindergarten-aged children, collected by school authorities across Alberta
Socio-economic status based on Statistics Canada census data
Information on community resources and characteristics
The ECMap project interprets the findings and compiles reports for the various study areas. With these reports, families, service providers, educators, government agencies and community coalitions can respond appropriately to the needs in their community. Community coalitions are made up of service providers, early childhood professionals and community members who plan and promote community-based supports for young children and families.
